On this day, 19 Feb 2002, American heavy metal band Slipknot, played Cardiff International Arena on their European Iowa Tour 2K2.
Support was provided by One Minute Silence, In Flames and American Head Charge.

Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows.

The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999.

The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular.

Slipknot's music and image have been the subject of many controversies throughout its career. The lyrical content of some of Slipknot's songs has been linked to several violent and criminal incidents.

In 2003, two young killers blamed the lyrics of "Disasterpiece" for their crime. In 2006, the lyrics of "Surfacing" were found at the site of a grave robbery.

image5-11 copy.jpeg

On this day, 17 Feb 1994, Scottish band the Cocteau Twins played Cardiff University.

The group earned critical praise for their distinctive ethereal sound and the soprano vocals of Elizabeth Fraser.

They had previously released their seventh album Four-Calendar Café

It distinguishes itself from the rest of the Twins' catalogue in two major areas: The sound is much more pop-oriented and less ambient than previous works, and vocalist Elizabeth Fraser's lyrics are more intelligible than usual. The album reached a respectable no13 in the UK charts whilst their single "Evangeline" was a moderate hit in several countries.

After nearly 20 years together, the band disbanded in 1997 in part due to issues stemming from the disintegration of Fraser and Guthrie's romantic relationship. In 2005, the band announced that they would reunite to headline Coachella and embark on a world tour but the reunion was cancelled a month later after Fraser refused to perform on stage with Guthrie.

On This Day 15/2/1971 T.Rex Vs Slade

image0-27.jpg

The Melody Maker Music Newspaper Produced a Fascinating story this week in 1971 over a gig at The Top Rank Cardiff.

Slade were to have been the original support band for T.Rex, but there was a row leading to accusations in the music press that Bolan had prevented them from playing'.
It was thought at the time that Slade’s former skinhead look would attract skinheads to the gig.
Noddy Holder, speaking for the group said: “I suppose they are afraid that a lot of skinheads would come to the ballroom to see us. We are no longer a skinhead group and getting more and more college bookings. This annoys us as we thought we were finally rid of the skinhead image.”
A spokesman for T.Rex denied the claim saying The Roy Young band were support and there was no need for two. It was nothing to do with the skinhead thing as T.Rex would play to anyone who wants to listen.
T.Rex had released their self titled album T.Rex in Dec 1970 which really broke T. Rex into the big time in the UK, following the surprise success of the single "Ride a White Swan", which reached No. 2 in the charts, and its smash No. 1 follow-up "Hot Love

The song’s writer said of Lola: “ I wanted to write a hit. It wasn't just the song. it was the musical design. It wasn't a power chord song like "You Really Got Me". It was a power chord beginning. It needed a special acoustic guitar sound ... sonorous, growling, with an attack to it.”
The album also featured Apeman, another 1970 hit for the band.
