On this day, 19 July 1992, Canadian rock legend Bryan Adams played Cardiff Arms Park on his Waking Up The World Tour. Support was provided by Extreme, Squeeze and Little Angels.

Review - South Wales Echo

Bryan Adams started by Waking Up The Neighbours - and anybody else at Cardiff Arms Park who might be doubting he's not here to stay.

The Canadian finished his British tour last night in fine stylec, and the party mood out front soon spread to the band. It's taken 10 years of hard slog to reach this peak, and Adams is relishing in.

His swaggering two-hour set ranged from strutting rock to ballads. But he's a rocker at heart, and while the show was (pleasingly) short on gimmicks, it was never short of passion.

Robin Hood's slings and arrows have brought outrageous fortune for Adams. And he teased the crowd before half way through launching into the inevitable (Everything I Do) I Do It For You.

There was a humourous banter with the band whether guitarist Keith Scott's grandmother isn't really Welsh, he had plaenty of home support.

Adams even demanded a rugby song from the 31,500 crowd and from his reaction, don't be surprised with a cover version of Bread Of Heaven on the next album.

He took the band breifly to a second stage, with a live favourite - Eddie Cochran's C'mon Everybody, before picking half-a-dozen fans from the crowd to join him for She's Only Happy When She's Dancing.

Then back to the main stage to finish with the Adams standard - Summer Of 69 - and Straight From The Heart, If there's a certain formula, few carry it off in such a no frills style.

On this day, 18 July 2005, German heavy rockers Rammstein played Cardiff’s International Arena on their Reise Reise Tour. Support was provided by Devil Sold His Soul.,

It was on this tour that the band was faced with several lawsuits resulting from severe fire breathing accidents involving audience members.

Reise, Reise is the band’s fourth studio album reaching no 37 in the UK album charts.

Formed in Berlin in 1994. The band's lineup—consisting of lead vocalist Till Lindemann, lead guitarist Richard Kruspe, rhythm guitarist Paul Landers, bassist Oliver Riedel, drummer Christoph Schneider, and keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz—has remained unchanged throughout their history, along with their approach to songwriting, which consists of Lindemann writing and singing the lyrics over instrumental pieces the rest of the band have completed beforehand.

Prior to their formation, some members were associated with the punk rock acts Feeling B and First Arsch.

On this day, 17 July 1993, Australian rock band INXS played Cardiff University on their Get Out Of The House tour.

The band were soon to release Full Moon, Dirty Heart, their ninth studio album which peaked at no 3 in the UK album charts.

When vocalist Michael Hutchence visited then girlfriend Helena Christensen in her home city of Copenhagen in Denmark. Hutchence got into a scuffle with a taxi driver.

The incident started when a drunken Hutchence refused to move off the road to allow the taxi to pass. The taxi driver got out of his vehicle and punched Hutchence causing him to fall onto the pavement.

The singer sustained a fractured skull due to the fall and as a result suffered a loss of his sense of smell and taste.[7] The singer spent two weeks recovering in a Copenhagen hospital.

In the unofficial biography Michael Hutchence: A Tragic Rock & Roll Story, Australian author Vince Lovegrove wrote, "It had a very strange effect on Michael. The alleged injury also caused the singer to act erratically, abusively and to suffer insomnia".

Although temporary, these conditions would have an effect during the production of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts.

On this day, 16 July 1990, legendary rockers the Rolling Stones played Cardiff’s National Stadium, Cardiff Arms Park, on their Urban Jungle tour. The concert was original to be played on the 11 July but Keith Richards had injured a finger and therefore the concert was postponed until 16th July.

These would be the last live concerts for the band with original member Bill Wyman on bass guitar. This tour would also be the longest the band had ever done up to that point, playing over twice as many shows as their standard tour length from the 1960s and 1970s.

On this day, 15 July 2001, pop superstar Robbie Williams played Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on his Weddings, Barmitzvahs & Stadiums Tour in support of his third studio album, Sing When You're Winning (2000). It was the second of two nights in Cardiff due to the demand, over the weekend playing to over 120,000 fans.

In the run up to the tour, Robbie performed to 400 people at an exclusive Radio 1 show at London club, Scala.

Prior to the gig Robbie revealed how the pressures of fame were taking their toll: "I do think that it doesn't stay like this forever, this amount of record sales and this notoriety. And while it is this big I really should get out of the country for a little bit. I love this country", he said, "I think it's fantastic, but life does get a bit like The Truman Show. People know when I've farted before I have. It is a bit of a mindbender."

14th July 2008 on this day - def leppard

The C'mon C'mon single was released in the UK on the same day as this show as a 12 inch picture disc.

The band had recently released their first album of new studio material in six years, Songs from the Sparkle Lounge.

Review

Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Thunder, CIA By David Barnes

David Coverdale rocked and rolled back the years as the 2008 incarnation of his 1978 band Whitesnake blew away an adoring capacity audience at Cardiff's CIA after the night had been opened by an impressive Thunder.

Prowling the stage like a caged tiger on heat, ex Deep Purple Coverdale and his stupendous five-piece band powered through number after majestic number.

This was no concert for the uninitiated. It was for the hard core fans, many of whom had been following the Snake for 30 years, and boy did they just love it.

In a set which included some 14 songs plus towering guitar solos, Whitesnake served up what the customer ordered, rising to a crescendo with Is This Love and the anthem Here I Go Again until climaxing with In The Still Of The Night. Awesome.

Headlining, Def Leppard took up the gauntlet and produced a performance of epic proportions which saw energetic frontman, Joe Elliott, don a Wales rugby shirt for the encore before plunging into the seminal Let's Get Rocked.

Leppard, on full power throughout, had the entire arena vibrating to its very foundations as they delivered a 15 number set which included Two Steps Behind, Hysteria, Photograph, Pour Some Sugar On Me and the stunning Rock Of Ages.

"Don't forget us and we won't forget you" yelled Elliott at the end of almost five hours of music.

Metal fatigue? No chance on this showing.

This was metal at its very best - untarnished after over thirty years. Brilliant.

On this day 12/07/2002 Biffy Clyro

Images may be subject to copyright

Images may be subject to copyright

On this day, 12 July 2002, Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro played Cardiff’s Barfly.

In March the band had released their debut album Blackened Sky. The album reached number 78 on the UK Albums Chart, and spawned four singles.

Critical reception to Biffy Clyro's debut album was generally mixed. John Murphy of independent music website musicOMH, writing at the time of its release in 2002, claimed that Blackened Sky was evidence of Biffy's status as "the most exciting new band in Britain", drawing comparisons to influencing band Nirvana and praising elements such as the consistency in the vocal performances.

The band have never disclosed where the name 'Biffy Clyro' originated, and Simon Neil has said that it was "a stupid name" that was often "awkward" to explain its origins when the band started and when not many had heard their music.

Whilst being interviewed on Soccer AM, the band said that they make up stories about how they are named because they are bored with being asked the same question. Among the conflicting answers the band have given are:

In a Soccer AM interview, the band stated that they named themselves after a footballer named Biffy Clyro who played for South Ayrshire football club Ayr United,

Another story is that the band members were thinking about manufacturing Cliff Richard merchandise and they thought about the Laszlo Biro pen and thought of "Cliffy Biro" that was then accidentally spoonerised on a drunken night out to 'Biffy Clyro'.

Another interview claims that the name Biffy Clyro comes from an acronym for "Big Imagination For Feeling Young 'Cos Life Yearns Real Optimism".

The band stated in an interview for BalconyTV that the name was that of a Finnish footballer from the 17th century.

On Off the Ball in August 2011, Ben Johnston said "Well it's a marriage of two words: Biffy is in fact the nickname of the spy who the James Bond novels were based on and Clyro is a village in Wales where both our families … used to go on holiday …"

In an episode of Music Choice's Pop Quiz, Simon Neil said that Biffy Clyro is the name of a Scotsman that built his own rocket and was the first man in space.

"'Mon the Biffy!" or, in more recent times, "'Mon the Biff!", are well known chants among Clyro fans,[42] usually shouted in between songs at gigs, or before the band comes on stage.
